The Surin Islands are another spectacular marine National
Park, 50 nautical miles from the Similans and close to the
Burmese border.
Above the water, the five islands are close together and
covered in rainforest, with the largest inhabited by a small
Sea Gypsy community.
Under
the water, hard coral reefs, similar to the east side of the
Similans and hawksbill turtles can be seen along with huge
varieties of colorful reef fish. The top dive site though,
lies at Richelieu Rock, 9 nautical miles east of the Surin
Islands. This rocky outcrop offers simply the best in the
Surin area. Covered by soft corals the Richelieu Rock just
seems to draw every fish in the ocean. Its also the place
where youre most likely to see the magnificent Whaleshark.
More are encountered here than anywhere else.
To swim close to one of these huge gentle fish is the thrill
of lifetime. If you are lucky you may see a rare shovelnose
ray or guitarfish, observe cuttlefish mating rituals or pass
by schools of cruising chevron barracuda. Quite special. Liveaboard
Trips only.
